We collect the minimum amount of information needed to make Backline work: your phone number (for WhatsApp delivery), your email (for account management), and your payment details (handled securely by our payment processor — we never store card numbers).
We also collect anonymized usage data to help us understand which features fans and artists use most. This data is stripped of personally identifiable information before analysis.
Your phone number exists for one purpose: to add you to your chosen artist's private WhatsApp broadcast list. We do not use it for marketing, we do not share it with other artists, and we do not sell it to third parties — ever.
Your email is used for account notifications (billing, plan changes, and security alerts). You can opt out of non-essential emails at any time.
Artists see aggregated numbers — total subscribers, open rates, reply counts. They do not see individual phone numbers unless you reply directly to their message (at which point WhatsApp handles the exchange).
We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or partners. Full stop.
If you cancel your subscription, we remove your phone number from the artist's list within 24 hours. Your account data is retained for 90 days in case you reactivate, then permanently deleted.
Payment records are retained for 7 years per legal requirements, but contain no personally identifiable information beyond what's necessary for tax compliance.
You have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your data at any time. Email privacy@backline.fm with your request — we respond within 72 hours.
If you're in the EU, GDPR applies. If you're in California, CCPA applies. Either way, we treat every user with the same level of respect and transparency.
